Two professors – two opinions

IE Business School’s Professors of Operations Management, Luis Miravitlles and Felipe Amado Quintana have begun a new educational practice within their Operations and Supply Chain Management classes in different programmes such as the Executive MBA and the GMBA+.
Both professors prepared additional multimedia material for the MRW (multimedia) case study written by Professor Miravitlles. This additional material consists of 7 mini- discussions between both professors. Through a role play they adopt opposing roles to discuss the most important points of the case study. By using this methodology they provide students with a starting point for the class discussion (videoconference, discussion board). The objective of this material is to take the case discussion a step further and to have a deeper insight in the decision making process. This approach is ideal for executive and in-company classes where students have to focus on decision making justified with solid arguments.

For both professors this approach was seen to “enhance the learning experience through collaboration in the development process, learning different points of view. And at the end of the day this leads to a more motivating and enriched experience for the students.”


Fashion and visual media

Students of IE School of Communication visit the Madrid Fashion Week

The students of the Master in Visual Media at IE School of Communication went on a field trip to Mercedes Benz Madrid Fashion Week, as part of their course on Events Creation and Management.

Guided by Pelonio, a creative consultancy based in Madrid, students visited the backstage area and watched some of the most innovative fashion shows programmed under the “El Ego” series, which features young up-and-coming Spanish designers. After the show, they enjoyed a cocktail in the company of models and designers like Pepa Salazar, Assaad Awad and María Rosenfeldt (heridadegato), as well as social media celebrities like Andrés Borque and Pepino y Crawford.

As Dani, one of the students mentions: “Visiting the Madrid Fashion Week was an amazing opportunity to complement everything we were learning in class. Thanks to Gema and Andrés that showed us around and explained us what happens throughout the process, we got to see how such an important event gets organized and managed. We had a great time and it was a very enriching learning experience.”

Getting the best from the touch screens in class.

Marketing and Strategy Professor Ángel Núñez manages the touch screens at María de Molina 31 in a new and innovative way.

Up to now our professors used one of the touch screens as master, while the second reproduced exactly what was being showed in the first monitor. Ángel uses both of them as master, as two separated computers. This way he can alternate different contents on each screen.

One of the most interesting uses Ángel makes of the two monitors is to have Skype sessions with guest speakers, while he presents the ideas related to the interview in the other screen.

But that is only the beginning. Imagine the value the use of two master screens can add to your classes… In his own words: “using the two screens as master takes the visualization of data in class to a superior level; resources multiply without interruption, facilitating the participation dynamics”.

Excel, whiteboard, Power Point, Prezi, Youtube, multimedia cases… All these can be presented in a combined way to the students. And students themselves can take advantage of this configuration during their own presentations!


Video killed the case star?

Professor Nicola Gatti develops his own video case resumés

A general proverb says “A video says more than a 1000 words.” Associate Professor of Strategy and Strategic Management, Nicola Gatti, took this general phrase into practice and developed his own pre-case videos. These videos work as a small introduction into the case studies for students with an executive level. Most students like managers in the AMP programs have little time to prepare. Nicola made a virtue from this need by recording himself short introductions to each case, in order to foster the motivation to read through the case and, if this is not possible for the students, to have at least a general idea of the content.
With these small executive résumés the case discussion in class will be anticipated and future questions and issues could be mentioned.
For Nicola this practice is also a “great possibility to raise the visibility and visual contact with the professor. People in a blended learning environment like to see the face of the professor. Audiovisuals are easier to assume then written words. I would encourage other professors to test the practice. After all, you can do it with simple tools like a digital camera and a free video-editing software”.

Synergies between subjects? – Academic integration at the Global MBA

Role play between Finance and Operations Management professors

Some critics say that academic knowledge is something like a silo based point of view of a single subject: But MBA Students are supposed to have a general management view on the top of that.

Therefore IE’s Financial Management Professor Virginia Bombin and Operations Management Professor Felipe Amado Quintana started a new and innovative initiative: They held a surprise online discussion in their last videoconference of the subject. In a role play they pretended to be the operations manager and the financial manager of the same company. The objective of this exercise was to show students why they have to think outside their one subject focused management point of view and be aware of the links between the Finance and Operations department. Instead of working against each other, departments have to show synergies by coordinating, mutual knowledge, a good analysis of forecasts and KPIs, a coordinated study of the mutual investments and of strategy, in short, medium and long term perspectives.
As Felipe mentioned: These types of initiatives help the students to understand different points of view under a common umbrella, integrating them into a global vision, helping to obtain holistic management knowledge.
Students mentioned that they also got a real sense of coordination between professors with this fun videoconference.


Boosting feedback in class

Different IE professors use clickers in the classroom

At IE Business School electronic response systems have been used for years in blended programs in the videoconference sessions. Through survey polls students are able to give immediate feedback on different questions. This experience has been transferred to face to face classes with a response system that professors can borrow from the learning innovation department. Clickers are physical electronic student response systems, usually allowing for A,B,C,D,E,… or number responses.

At IE, professors of Financial Management, such as Carmen Alonso-Muñoyerro and Carlos Bellon, Marketing professor Antonios Stamatogiannakis or Lee Newman from the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, have been using this technology to boost synchronous class feedback. Some of the advantages of the system are:

• Everyone participates, not just the overly vocal.
• The results of the voting could be shown in different types of graphs that are developed immediately.
• It is much easier to vote, as oppose to a large number of students raising their hands.
• There is the possibility to vote, not only through the clickers, but also by smart phone or other mobile devices.

Pictures sometimes say more than words: As you can observe from the photo, students love the experience.

Short video cases for Executive Education

Professor Manuel Bermejo starts with the first of a new case series

The initiative of the case series wants to foster the possibility of class discussion with Executive Education participants who generally have less time to read through large case materials. These cases are a single page, with an additional video interview (maximum 30 minutes), which is shown in the classroom in order to start a debate.

This first case details the career path of Ignacio Bao. An exceptional story, beginning with various positions in a host of multinationals and then starting his own headhunting company.

The case tells the story of Bao’s headhunting company which is integrated in an international network, Signium International, and has its headquarters in Chicago.

The case is designed for the entrepreneurship module of the Top Management Program, and talks about how to succeed in mature markets, how to build international networks, what profile is important for entrepreneurship and how it is possible to balance family and business life. In the intense first week of this program, in which IE students joined together with students fromt the University of San Andres, the protagonist visited the class to discuss these points with the students in person.
As Manuel Bermejo mentions: “This case is a perfect tool for a new learning experience in Executive Education: It let participants see how you have to create an organization with an entrepreneurial DNA in order to be able to compete on a global market.”


Blending theory and practical classes

University students go online

2012 is an era full of different open initiatives around the globe, but there is still one very important question for institutional learning: How is it possible to integrate online learning and face to face classes effectivly in a formal higher education setting?

As some of you may know, at IE University students from the bachelor degrees have large internship phases incorporated into their studyplans. All students are required to gain practical work experience with internships all around the globe (UK, USA, India, Germany, among many other countries) and at the same time theoretical and practical online classes. The study programs include both on-site and online sessions in a dynamic combination, unparalleled in any other school.

Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their professional fields right from the start of the program. This exercise in experiential learning allows partipcants the chance to engage directly with real-world professionals from the first year of the program.

As one of the professors mentioned: “This is a great opportunity for students to study and gain work experience at the same time. Personally i enjoy teaching online.”

Crossing the Rio Bravo in class

A fun exercise on communication for project management

Have you ever thought of crossing a (virtual) river in the middle of a classroom? – That was one of the Masters in Management student’s challenges in their Project Management class.
This entertaining game is made up of two rival teams whose objective is to cross the river by foot. The “river” is basically a checkered table cloth. Each square represents a stone to cross the river or represents water where the teams will sink. The instructor of the class knows the right path that students have to discover to cross successfully and he/she will blow a whistle when they fall into the water; when this happens students have to start over again. Players are not allowed to communicate verbally once the game begins; but have the chance to set a non-verbal communication strategy before beginning.These rules mean students have to collaborate in a completely new manner.

All team members have to participate in the process and the first team to cross the river wins.
Project Management Professors Antonio Zabaleta, Sharada Ravindran and Fabrizio Tesolato think that this exercise helps students to understand in a dynamic way different communication techniques and it allows them to observe other important techniques for project management in general, such as for example; being aware that a plan can change, or that, to continue moving forward sometimes you have to go back to benchmark and observe the competitor´s strategy and what they have learned.
After the fun period trying to cross the river, students move to the classroom to discuss the conclusions.


Opportunities are like…

An exercise for meta cognition in the entrepreneurship area

“Describing seemingly unrelated concepts with similes or metaphors reveals fresh solutions to familiar problems.” That’s one of the statements IE Professor of Entrepreneurship, Joseph Pistrui, says about the new class dynamic “Opportunities …”

This exercise is digitally enhanced by a simple technical platform produced by the Multimedia Content Development team in order to facilitate the debrief of the professor.
Students have to complete the following phrase: “Opportunities are like……because……therefore…..” as often as they want to. Afterwards they have to interchange their different points of views in their entrepreneurship work groups. In a final step the professor debriefs the class and showcases some of the most interesting examples.
A first beta test with Google docs forms has been running in the IMBA 2011 and students mention some very powerful learning outcomes, such as:

– Thinking about ideas in general brings forward your own ideas (Meta cognition, consciousness, egocentric connections.)
– We appreciated very much what the other team mates said
– “This was very illuminating”

Also for the Professor, Joseph Pistrui this exercise has fulfilled expectations and fits perfectly into the broader approach of sense making exercises in the entrepreneurship area.
